Mhairi Black’s drag queen stunt has backfired spectacularly

Sometimes a politician displays such spectacularly bad judgement their only option is to lash out at their critics. This appears to explain how the SNP’s Mhairi Black has spent much of the past 24 hours. Black has never knowingly shied away from publicity. Perhaps then we shouldn’t be too surprised at her decision to pop along to a primary school for a reading session with a drag queen in tow. And not just any old drag queen but one with a penchant for sharing sexually explicit posts on social media. Children have always loved story time. Throwing drag queens into the mix is a far more recent development. Drag queen

SNP’s fake news

The SNP are a quieter force in Westminster since the snap election. Along with a reduction in size, they now have to face down the equally rowdy Scottish Conservatives each week at PMQs. Alas, it seems the new challenge is proving too great for the party’s digital operation. At PMQs, the SNP’s Mhairi Black criticised the government for singing the virtues of universal credit when her Tory colleagues in Stirling council have called for half a million pounds in extra funding to mitigate its effects. The SNP’s digital operation was quick to go on the offensive – criticising the Tories over their ‘hypocrisy’ on Universal Credit after ‘Tory-run Stirling council

Mhairi Black rejects Alex Salmond’s sartorial advances

Since arriving in Parliament in 2015, Mhairi Black has caused a stir in Westminster. The 23-year-old SNP MP rarely misses the chance to criticise the place – whether it’s the ‘old and defunct’ systems and procedures or the ‘sociopaths’ that inhabit it. Now it seems that not even her own party is beyond criticism. In an interview with Holyrood magazine, Black recalls an incident involving Alex Salmond, then an SNP MP. The party veteran took Black to lunch in a Commons restaurant, where he offered her some fashion advice: ‘I was just sitting chatting away to him and the whole time I’m thinking, what’s the point of this meant to be

Watch: Scottish Conservatives vs SNP

It’s Opposition day and the SNP’s motion calling for improved transitional measures for the ‘waspi’ women has been the cause of much commotion in the Chamber this afternoon. Although both sides intended to make important points on a pressing issue, it soon descended into a shouting match between the SNP’s Mhairi Black and the new Scottish Conservative MPs: A sample of the SNP vs the Scottish Conservatives on women's pensions age pic.twitter.com/Z9yjUvvmHd — Esther Webber (@estwebber) November 29, 2017 Just as well it was Rosie Winterton not John Bercow in the Speaker’s chair…

Mhairi Black’s mixed messages

Last week, the SNP proved particularly vocal at PMQs after they went on the offensive over a Scottish Conservative MP missing Labour’s opposition say debate on universal credit to referee at a Barcelona match. Although the vote was non-binding – and the Conservatives abstained anyway – Douglas Ross has since promised to hang up his whistle – after next year’s World Cup. Not willing to drop the issue, however, the SNP’s Mhairi Black has gone on the warpath in her Daily Record column today. Black says that while the SNP MPs were out in force, Ross ‘cared so little that he was completely absent from Parliament’: ‘One Scottish Tory MP, Douglas Ross,

Mhairi Black turns on herself

Who would want an MP who had never had a career outside of politics to represent them? That’s the question Mhairi Black has been asking today at SNP conference. Black used her speech at the event to say the SNP must reject ‘career politicians’. Hang on a minute. Given that the 23-year-old SNP politician went straight from a politics degree to a job in Westminster, isn’t she the definition of a ‘career politician’? Mr S hopes she isn’t trying to put herself out of a job…

Select committee wars: Jacob Rees Mogg’s secret weapon

When the Conservatives aren’t busy plotting against one another over a warm glass of prosecco, they are taking the struggle public in the select committee chairmanship elections. While young MPs Johnny Mercer and Tom Tugendhat attempt to usurp the older generation in the defence and foreign select committees, the two frontrunners for chair of the Treasury select committee are Jacob Rees Mogg and Nicky Morgan. Although it’s been perceived as a battle of Brexit vs Remain (with pro-Remainers expected to collude in order to stop a Leave campaigner taking the plum role), Mr S thinks it would be wrong to write Rees-Mogg off just yet. According to the Brexiteer’s nomination papers, he

Jacob Rees-Mogg: ‘the SNP are now the real opposition’

While Mhairi Black has made no secret of her dislike for the Tories, she has at least found words of praise for one Conservative MP. Speaking earlier this year, the SNP MP spoke of her admiration for Jacob Rees-Mogg: ‘I could sit and listen to him all day, I disagree with him 99.9 per cent of the time, and that wee percent is just because he’s got good manners. But I love listening to him, his knowledge is incredible, and he’s so polite.’ Now Rees-Mogg has returned the favour. At last night’s annual Freedom Association’s Christmas Quiz at the Barley Mow, Rees-Mogg took time out of his quizmaster duties to wax lyrical

Jacob Rees-Mogg finds an unlikely fan in Mhairi Black

In Mhairi Black’s maiden speech in the House of Commons, the young SNP MP voiced her opposition to the Tories by criticising George Osborne over his party’s housing policy. However, despite calling the Conservatives ‘a really dangerous party’ in an interview with the Guardian, it appears Black has at least softened in her approach to some members of the party. The SNP MP says that she has a lot of time for Jacob Rees-Mogg, adding that she could listen to the eurosceptic Tory MP all day: ‘I could sit and listen to him all day, I disagree with him 99.9 per cent of the time, and that wee percent is just because he’s got good

Watch: Mhairi Black plays ‘My Heart Will Go On’

Mhairi Black won millions of fans with her maiden speech in Parliament criticising George Osborne over his cuts to the welfare system. However, today she has offered the nation a glimpse of her softer side, professing her love for Titanic. In a somewhat bizarre interview with Jon Snow, Black plays My Heart Will Go On — the theme from the blockbuster film — on a piano which just happens to be in the interview room: “I’ve always been obsessed with Titanic…it’s one of the few areas of my life there’s not politics”. The SNP’s Mhairi Black MP spoke to Jon Snow on the anniversary of the Scottish independence referendum. Posted by Channel 4 News on Friday,

The SNP is forcing Cameron to think of Scotland. They may come to regret that

No one can deny that the SNP has made Westminster pay more attention to Scotland. Five years ago, it was surprising—and, in many ways, shocking—how uninformed most MPs were of what was happening in Scottish politics. That is one of the reasons why the independence referendum was treated as a second-order issue – until people realised quite how close it was going to be. But that has all changed now with the 56 SNP MPs making their presence felt in the Chamber. This is particularly true of Downing Street because with Angus Robertson having two questions at PMQs each week, David Cameron—who prepares assiduously for these sessions—needs to know what is

Was Yvette Cooper ‘inspired’ by Mhairi Black’s maiden speech?

Last week the SNP MP Mhairi Black gave her maiden speech to Parliament. The young politician inspired the nation with her story of a man in her constituency who came to her crying after a trip to the job centre went wrong: ‘I said to him “how did you get on?” And without saying a word he burst into tears. That grown man standing in front of a 20-year-old crying his eyes out.’ The clip went viral, amassing millions of views worldwide, with Black’s words highly commended by both SNP and Labour politicians alike. So much so that their were whispers of concern at Labour HQ that it could trigger certain members of the party to lurch

Mhairi Black: I’m the only 20-year-old George Osborne will help with housing

Last week the SNP MP Phil Boswell made a ‘depravity’ gaffe in his maiden speech. Happily, his colleague – and Parliament’s youngest MP – Mhairi Black had more luck today when she gave her first speech in the House of Commons. The 20-year-old SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South began by praising her predecessor Douglas Alexander, Labour’s election strategist. ‘Firstly in my maiden speech I want to pay tribute to my predecessor Douglas Alexander, he served the constituency for many years. After all I was only three when he was elected, but it was because of that fact that I want to thank him for all he did in the constituency and I

Exclusive: top Scottish academic speaks out over Mhairi Black ‘slut’ tweet

After Scottish Labour compiled a dossier of online abuse by cybernats, Scottish nationalists were quick to respond that supporters of other parties are just as bad. Step forward Jill Stephenson, Professor Emeritus of Modern German History at the University of Edinburgh. The retired academic is in the firing line over tweets she sent ahead of the election calling SNP MP Mhairi Black a ‘foul-mouthed slut’. After the Scottish Herald dug up the tweets over the weekend, the SNP responded with a strongly worded statement against her: ‘As we have repeatedly stated, the online debate in Scottish politics should be respectful at all times – that clearly includes people who oppose the SNP and independence, as this person

Has Mhairi Black been trespassing in George Osborne’s office?

Since the 56 SNP MPs entered Parliament, they have taken to ‘rebelling’ against the establishment in a number of ways. So far they have focussed their time on trying to nab Dennis Skinner’s seat, going against Commons’ etiquette by clapping in the chamber, and purchasing white roses for the Queen’s Speech. Now they also appear to have had enough of corridors. Stewart McDonald, the SNP MP, claims that the Commons’ youngest MP Mhairi Black has come up with a shortcut through Parliament that involves walking through the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s office: And there was Mr S thinking that Black was beginning to prove the naysayers wrong.

Britain’s youngest MP is given a warm Westminster welcome

Warning: The SNP revolution has begun in Westminster. This afternoon Nicola Sturgeon arrived at parliament with her 56 newly elected SNP MPs in tow. However, despite talk of discord between the Scots and English, Mr S is assured that so far relations are remarkably civil. Mhairi Black, the 20-year-old student who ousted Labour’s Douglas Alexander from his seat to become the youngest MP for centuries, told the BBC’s Tim Reid that the English can’t be too scared of the SNP as everyone has been very polite so far: Oh the innocence of youth.

Labour’s election chief in campaign struggle to hold onto his seat

Douglas Alexander claimed this week that Facebook has made it difficult for politicians to campaign successfully. He said that Labour were struggling to win back voters in Scotland as a result of conspiracy theories being posted on social media. Perhaps Labour’s campaign chief  was simply trying to make early excuses for his own performance in the upcoming election. Alexander is predicted to lose his Paisley and Renfrewshire South seat to a 20-year-old SNP candidate. In a bid to turn the tide, Alexander has been desperately tapping up friends for much-needed campaign cash. Mr S can reveal that the former lawyer has taken £28,000 since January. His donors include David Miliband’s former adviser David Claydon as well as solicitor Fraser Oliver. Surely,
