Today the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has launched a campaign telling the world that London is ‘still open for business’.  He has announced a Twitter hashtag: #LondonisOpen. It’s an odd campaign, echoing the ‘Britain is open for business’ line that George Osborne was trying to peddle before being sacked. The premise seems to be that the Brexit vote was a disaster, but one we can recover from if we grit our teeth and adopt the spirit of the blitz. Since Andrea Leadsom dropped out on Monday, Conservative MPs have done their best to put any differences behind them and rally behind their new leader. Finally George Osborne has seen an upside to Britain voting to leave the European Union. The Chancellor used this morning to abandon another one of his own economic targets, blaming it on Brexit. He has long been warned by experts such as the Institute for Fiscal Studies that he is likely to fail to deliver a £10bn surplus on the public finances by 2020, and today he admitted as much. It sounds logical that Vote Leave should now disband, since the people have obligingly voted Leave, but is it wise? Who else can try to ensure that the Leave cause is not forgotten in internal Tory struggles, or in a war between Ukip and the rest? George Osborne has turned his back on ‘Project Fear’ after finally breaking his Brexit silence. The aim of his speech this morning was all about reassuring the financial markets before they opened.
