Tory Twitter gets personal

Resignations! Accusations! Recriminations! It’s all kicking off in the Tory party at present. One man’s misfortune is another man’s opportunity – and no man knows that better than Nadhim Zahawi, the newly-appointed Chancellor now sporting the biggest grin in Westminster.

Not all Conservative MPs though are happy at seeing their colleagues rise. News that Michelle Donelan was to be promoted from universities minister to Education Secretary was not well received by Telford Tory Lucy Allan. The unorthodox backbencher didn’t seem impressed by the move, responding to a No. 10 tweet announcing the appointment with just one word ‘Seriously.’

Is there some historic, little-known feud between the pair? Mr S hopes that friends of the two women get in touch to clarify. What a shame that Allan only recently stepped down from the education select committee – think of the fun the two could have had together.

Elsewhere, more evening entertainment was provided by the shenanigans of Nadine Dorries. The ever-online Culture Secretary has truly earned her promotion in recent months, firing off a series of sycophantic tweets whenever Johnson finds himself in a jam.

Last night though she had something of a slip up after failing not once but twice to accurately congratulate Zahawi on his promotion. First, Dorries tweeted that ‘he will deliver for health in the same way he delivered for vaccines and education’ – suggesting Zahawi was about to become Health Secretary. Unsurprisingly, that was quickly deleted.

Then she shared a tweet congratulated which featured two images of Steve Barclay, the new Health Secretary, alongside one of Zahawi along with a message of congratulation for the latter. That too was deleted before Dorries got it right at the third time of trying.

Given all their problems on social media, no wonder that the Tories want to use the Online Safety Bill to curb ‘Big Tech’…
