The Cruz-Kasich alliance has failed to stop Donald Trump

Another Tuesday, another triumph for Donald Trump. The Republican frontrunner had a clean sweep at last night’s primaries, winning easily in all the states that voted. He took all the delegates from Pennsylvania Maryland,  Connecticut, and Delaware — plus 9 of 15 in Rhode Island. After his huge victory in New York last week, that means he has won around 200 delegates in the last seven days.

Before last week, it looked very much as if Trump would fall short of 1237 delegates, which is the majority he needs (in theory) to win the nomination in the first round of voting in July. Now, he is on course not only to reach that 1237 bar but to clear it comfortably.  He’s won around 200 delegates in the last week alone. If he can win in Indiana next week, his convention majority will look almost certain.

John Kasich and Ted Cruz, the other candidates still in the race, have been working together to try and stop Trump reaching the nomination, but they can’t. It is now mathematically impossible for Cruz and Kasich to reach the nomination — and why would people vote for a candidate who cannot win?

The technical excuses for contesting the party Convention in July are sounding more spurious every day. If Trump continues to pick delegates at this rate, the only way the Republican Party will be able to prevent the Donald from winning the nomination is if they cheat him of it. In fact, the very unfairness of the various plots to deny Trump the nomination might be exactly what is turning even more Republican voters towards the Donald.
