The Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt joined Laura Kuenssberg this morning ahead of the Autumn Statement, which will be held on Thursday. Fans of a good fiscal event will no doubt reflect on 2022 as a stellar year, but for most people the outlook will not be rosy. Embracing the possibility of a recession ahead, Hunt laid the groundwork for some unpopular choices:
‘We need to understand’ why people left the labour force
Kuenssberg challenged Hunt over why the UK had not yet managed to grow the economy back to where it had been before the pandemic turned everything on its head:
The NHS is in ‘a very very tricky situation’
Sophy Ridge asked Hunt about NHS waiting times and if the health service was at breaking point:
Rachel Reeves – ‘Public services are already on their knees’
Ridge also spoke to the Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who told Ridge that she had no plans to support ‘Austerity 2.0’:
Tony Radakin – Russia is taking ‘desperate measures’
Sky’s Deborah Haynes interviewed the Chief of the Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin.
