It’s getting a bit dirty in the Tory leadership race now. Over the weekend, briefings heated up between the Sunak and Truss camps. Both accused each other of being ‘soft’ on China; the former’s introduction of free ports has been attacked by the latter while Sunak’s schooling has also come under fire from allies of the Foreign Secretary. Good luck to whoever has to unite this party after 5 September…
In these troubled times, it would take a master diplomat to try to hold the fraying Tory ties together. So cometh the hour, cometh the Culture Secretary, to pour oil on troubled waters. Nadine Dorries has been something of a one-woman attack dog these past few months, turning her fury on those viewed as disloyal to Boris Johnson. So persistent were her defences of Johnson that ‘Brexit hardman’ Steve Baker even booted her off their WhatsApp chat together.
Since Rishi Sunak’s resignation she’s turned her attentions on him, accusing him of ‘dirty tricks’, ‘dark arts’ and not ‘working hard’ during the pandemic. Tell us what you really think, eh Nadine? And now, after savaging his work ethic and personal integrity, the Mid Bedfordshire MP has today returned to the fray. She tweeted this morning an article about Sunak’s wardrobe, sneering at his sartorial choices, declaring that:
@trussliz will be travelling the country wearing her earrings which cost circa £4.50 from Claire Accessories. Meanwhile… Rishi visits Teeside in Prada shoes worth £450 and sported £3,500 bespoke suit as he prepared for crunch leadership vote.
It prompted Angela Richardson, a Rishi backer and fellow Tory MP, to tweet: ‘FFS Nadine! Muted.’ How many of her colleagues feel the same?
