Zara Phillips has been spotted wearing a hairnet, and people do not approve. ‘Zara swaps tiara for Corrie hairnet’ runs one headline, with the article comparing her to Coronation Street’s Ena Sharples. I think we can all agree that a hairnet, on its own and minus a hat, isn’t the best look in the world.
Mind you, having said that, I do know certain men who think hairnets are ‘rather sexy’. I suppose it takes all sorts – and it is the sort of thing that someone in a Jilly Cooper novel might say. I imagine that Rupert Campbell-Black, for instance, might have a thing for hairnets.
Anyway, I’ll admit now that I’ve spent an awful lot of time trying to avoid a ‘real’ hairnet. For years, I bought ballerina-style bun nets – which, after all, are slightly more attractive than an all-over hairnet. But finally I gave in and embraced the horsey hairnet, and I now can’t do anything but sing their praises. They might not be attractive on their own, but for sheer smartness out hunting or in the show ring, you simply can’t beat them.
I doubt that Zara cares very much – if at all – what people think of her hairnet. But I care, and so what if a snapper managed to get some pictures of her wearing one minus a hat? It keeps hair tidy and, dare I say it, elegant, under a hat – a million miles from the Ena Sharples image that some are trying to foist on her. Plus, as the Pony Club dress rules say, ‘In the interests of safety, long hair must be secured appropriately in a hairnet’. In this day and age, health and safety rules trump everything else. Hairnets for everyone!
